Last month, DRPT staff attended the State of Transit, hosted by our friends at Hampton Roads Transit, Suffolk Transit, and Williamsburg Area Transit Authority. That event inspired us to spotlight the range of transit in each region throughout the Commonwealth, starting in the Tidewater region – and beyond!

This month, Data Stories is putting the spotlight on some of Northern Virginia’s standout transit agencies: The Washington Metro (WMATA/Metro) and the Virginia Railway Express (VRE).

In Fiscal Year 2025 (July 2024 to June 2025), Virginia’s 40 public transit agencies combined to provide over 144 million trips – 14% more than in Fiscal Year 2024!

This month, DRPT dives into rail in Virginia, both freight and passenger rail, to highlight the importance of the “Iron Horse”. In addition, this Data Story looks at the performance of DRPT’s rail grant programs and Amtrak’s ridership in Virginia.

WMATA – or Metro – is a multi-state transit network that serves Virginia, D.C., and Maryland, with subway, bus, and paratransit services. As a system, WMATA is one of the largest public transit services in the entire United States and is the largest in Virginia by some distance.
