Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP)

Program Background

The Transit Ridership Incentive Program is a statewide grant program dedicated to improving transit’s regional connectivity in urban areas with a population in excess of 100,000 and reducing barriers to transit use by supporting low-income and zero-fare programming.

Regional Connectivity

The Transit Ridership Incentive Program’s regional connectivity component promotes improved public transportation services in urban areas with a population greater than 100,000. The program’s goal is the identification and establishment of routes of regional significance, the development and implementation of a regional subsidy allocation model, implementation of integrated fare collection, establishment of bus-only lanes on routes of regional significance, and other actions and service determined by the Commonwealth Transportation Board to improve transit service.

Eligible Regions: Blacksburg, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads, Lynchburg, Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Roanoke

DRPT accepted regional connectivity applications during the FY24 grant period. The application period opened on December 1, 2022, and closed on February 1, 2023


Zero Fare and Low Income

The Transit Ridership Incentive Program’s zero-fare and low income projects set out to reduce barriers to transit use for low-income individuals throughout the Commonwealth.

DRPT accepted zero-fare and low income applications during the FY24 grant period. This application period opened on December 1, 2022 and closed on February 1, 2023.

  • December 1, 2022
    DRPT began accepting applications for the FY24 Cycle
  • February 1, 2023
    Fillable PDF application and supporting documentation (including letters of support) were due to TRIP@drpt.virginia.gov and/or through OLGA under ‘Demonstration Grants’
  • Spring 2023
    DRPT will review applications and submit funding recommendations to the Commonwealth Transportation Board

    • July 1, 2023

    DRPT will finalize FY24 TRIP projects and project contracts will be released
