Safety and Oversight

undefinedDRPT is the designated State Safety Oversight (SSO) Agency for Rail Transit Agencies (RTA) in Virginia.  The authority for conducting safety oversight is derived from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Rule known as 49 CFR Part 659.  In March 2016, FTA issued the final rule 49 CFR Part 674 which addresses the changes enacted through the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) statute.  There are currently two RTAs in Virginia including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail and the Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) Tide Light Rail.
