During the 2011 Session, the Virginia General Assembly passed Senate Joint Resolution 297 (SJ297), which instructed DRPT to conduct a study of public transportation in the Commonwealth with a focus on providing recommendations on ways to maximize the Commonwealth’s transit investment. With a focus on performance, prioritization, stability and allocation, the goal is to develop proposed changes to the Code of Virginia in order to maximize benefits to public transportation, as well as to establish an efficient funding allocation process.
An interim report was sent to the General Assembly at the start of the 2012 Session. A working group, comprised of representatives from transit operators, TDM agencies and MPOs across the state, has been formed to work closely with DRPT as the study advanced. Their first meeting was held on June 16, with a second meeting held on August 3. A third meeting was held on September 14 at DRPT's headquarters. The Committee meetings were open to the public and began with an open comment period. Members of the public were allowed to stay and observe the remainder of the meetings.
