ART - Arlington Transit is a local bus system provided by Arlington County‚ Virginia. ART supplements the regional Metro system by providing service to neighborhoods not served by Metrobus‚ and increasing the frequency of bus service in other neighborhoods. ART operates smaller‚ neighborhood-friendly vehicles‚ and provides access to Metrorail and Virginia Railway Express (VRE). The current fleet of 33 buses consists of small‚ alternative-fueled compressed natural gas (CNG) buses operated on thirteen routes. All ART buses are fully ADA accessible with wheelchair lifts and priority seating. The ART bus service is operated through a contract with a private sector company‚ currently Forsythe Transportation.

GRTC is a full service transit system under the direction of a six-member board of directors with three each for the City of Richmond and Chesterfield County. The Board contracts with a management company to operate the system which consists of fixed route transit, demand response transit, a jobs access program, a ridesharing organization known locally as RideFinders, a shuttle system for Virginia Commonwealth University, and administration of the regions taxis. Hampton Roads Transit is the main public transit agency in the seven city region that comprises Hampton Roads. Operating 343 buses along 78 fixed routes‚ HRT provided about 15.7 million rides to customers in FY 2011. In addition‚ HRT operates paddlewheel ferry service on the Elizabeth River between downtown Portsmouth and Norfolk‚ regional transit service to the disabled through the Handi-Ride program‚ and ridesharing‚ van pooling and telecommuting services through the Traffix program. HRT also offers light rail transit service along a 7.4-mile route in the City of Norfolk. The Tide is Virginia’s first light rail service and operates from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center‚ through downtown Norfolk‚ east to the Virginia Beach border at Newtown Road. More information regarding the light rail can be found at www.gohrt.com. HRT is governed by the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads. The commission consists of representatives from each of the six cities that help fund HRT‚ one state senator‚ one state delegate and the chairman of the Commonwealth Transportation Board‚ or a designee. The commission meets monthly‚ alternating between Norfolk and Hampton.

Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) serves the City of Williamsburg‚ James City County and Bruton District of York County with bus‚ trolley‚ and paratransit services. Operation of Services is Monday - Saturday‚ 6:00am - 8:00pm during off-peak season and 6:00am - 10:00pm during peak summer months. Sunday service is from 8:00am - 6:00pm year-round. There are nine different color coded bus routes: Gray‚ Blue‚ Green‚ Orange‚ Purple 1‚ Purple 2‚ Red’ Tan‚ and Yellow (summer only). We also provide service for the College of William and Mary during the school year on the Green Line. The fares are $1.25 per one-way trip: plus $0.25 transfer. WJCC Middle and High school students‚ William & Mary students with school ID‚ and Thomas Nelson Community College students w/ school ID all ride free. The Board has selected a management company to run the day to operations of GLTC which includes a demand response system in addition to the fixed route vehicles. The Virginia Railway Express(VRE) is a transportation partnership of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission(NVTC) and the Potomac and Rappanhannock Transportation Commission(PRTC). VRE provides commuter rail service from Northern Virginia suburbs along the I-95 corridor with Fredericksburg as one end and Manassas as the end on the I-66 corridor. VRE serves Alexandria, Crystal City and Union Station in downtown D.C.
